Puzzles!

I grew up doing puzzles. Little me assumed this was normal until, one day, a kid came over who was fully confused by the most basic puzzle meant for a toddler I had sitting out. I don’t know why this simple puzzle was so challenging for him or why it seemed simple to me, but it occurred to me that maybe I was growing out of puzzles.

I don’t remember puzzles in the house after I was 8 or 9 years old. I’m sure they happened – maybe at school – but they weren’t feature for sure. I read books, I tried to write, I watched movies, I rode my bike, I played video games, I wandered around the woods when there were woods to wander. And then I felt too old for Disney merch and too young for the huge puzzles I saw old ladies tinkering with at a residential home nearby. I assumed puzzles bigger than 50 pieces were meant for the retiree crowd just looking to waste time between soap operas and too-early dinner.

After my mom got sick enough that I knew her condition was permanent in a way that meant I couldn’t work, I began looking for things I could do at home. Mostly I was looking for extremely cheap art projects. In that same time I wandered into the thrift store and noticed they kept a wall of puzzles and games, and one puzzle – a picture of a colorful makeup palette – caught my eye. I took it home. I wasn’t prepared for this endeavor at all and finished the puzzle on my carpeted floor. It went well. It seems I could still do a puzzle, and the bright colors were nice to look at as I put it together.

With my mom’s condition getting worse, I bought a few more puzzles that I thought might interest her and serve as a distraction. As far as I ever saw, she didn’t try to do them. Instead I sat on the living room floor and picked away at the puzzles off and on when I thought to do so, narrating difficulties and successes to keep her mind busy on something besides the new weird shit she was doing. I remember we had a puzzle on the table when I hired the final caregiver I personally hired, about a week before my mom’s brain decided walking was stupid. It was basically the last neutral thing before things went from bad to 24/7 terrible. After that I didn’t have it in me to sit in the living room any longer than I had to anymore, and all time not worried about her was spent doing the closest I could get to nothing in the absence of real sleep.

I tried puzzles again a few months after she, in short, moved out. It wasn’t going well. I didn’t have the patience, and my anxiety was bad so focus was minimal. Eventually I quit, boxed up the last puzzle I failed at, and donated it back to the thrift store like always.

Moving to a new place two years ago and feeling that sense of safety about my residence that I hadn’t had in a decade, I decided it was time to try a new puzzle. I got one I thought was pretty and tried working on it on my brand new floor. Despite my cosmic relief, the same month I was struggling emotionally with a guy telling me one thing but doing anything but, which concluded in me deciding I needed a break from his ilk. (Your chosen people shouldn’t make you feel lonely and anxious for weeks/months with no conclusion or attempt at giving a shit how you feel.) The all-around stress I felt from moving combined with that and landed at an inability to tolerate inconveniences like not understanding how I couldn’t figure out this tedious-ass puzzle. I had made some slow progress then stalled, got angry at it, decided I was barking up the wrong tree, and threw the puzzle back in the box. I decided I’d donate it back. Fuck stupid puzzles.

I ended up leaving behind or forgetting the donation box every time I went to the thrift store. Then one day I decided, you know what, I’m going to cut up that old dress I meant to donate and make it into a pillowcase. Hmm, there’s that puzzle again. Later I decided I was going to go through more old stuff, so one box became three or four. At that, I pulled the tedious but pretty puzzle out of the donation and put it back on a shelf.

Meanwhile, I bought other puzzles. I eventually did three. The first two I did in 2-3 sittings each, and it was a nice analog distraction from screens. They were both easier than I expected and fun to do. The third was a full price 1000 piece puzzle that ate up my floor for two weeks, but I made consistent progress and it was largely enjoyable. I liked the routine of spending a few minutes in the middle of the day picking at it.

I didn’t like when I sat too long and my back or legs started to hurt. I thought about buying a puzzle board or puzzle table. Which one made more sense? Maybe I would get a bigger desk or a kitchen table for versatility. Well, that requires taking a tape measure out into the world and somehow figuring out how to get whatever I find home, or buying something online. If I buy something online I probably don’t get to cheap out like in person and then I have to gamble with delivery issues. Do I want to risk having something deliver at a weird time or having to wait around all day? Maybe I wait. As in, maybe I wait to make a decision about this, if there’s one to be had.

The floor beckoned. I really liked the routine I’d created over this. There’s only so much video game or reading one can do. It was nice to do something physical with my hands and mind, no screen to be found beyond maybe a little TV that I wasn’t even looking at. Maybe I could do one more puzzle on the floor.

I’m saving a couple of puzzles for later in the year. Others I wasn’t sure about. And that left… the exceptionally tedious pretty one. Well. Hm. I’d had good luck so far. Let’s try again. I’d probably be better at it, all that stress from before gone and now having recent practice.

I put the puzzle box on the floor and started sorting out edge pieces. That’s about as far as I got.

I realize the issue now. The image isn’t intuitive. Colors don’t match from piece to piece. The image on the pieces is blurry, nondescript. The pieces themselves all feel dissimilar, like nothing belongs with anything else. This is a puzzle meant for someone who isn’t looking at the image whatsoever, who gets their kicks from one-color puzzles, where it’s all about sorting out shapes.

I got pissed off at it fast. I got up and walked away from it. I returned intending to box it up but instead put the edge pieces I hadn’t connected to anything yet into a plastic bag “for later”, uncertain what I’d actually do – continue or box it back up. I came back, emptied the bag, picked away with minimal success. Quickly I found myself staring at these still undone edge pieces that I feel like I spent an hour on already, and noped out. Fuck you. Back in the box. Getting donated for reals this time. Wish I’d done it already.

Maybe I spend some more time reading instead.

Unseen Movies

For the last several years I’ve posted the bulk of my watchlist queue on whichever blog I’ve had about annually. This year my finger fucking hurts and doesn’t want to format that shit. So, instead, I’m going to break it down to a smaller list of high rated movies and some upcoming movies of particular interest to me. Hopefully I have words to share about movies I’ve never seen.

We start over a hundred years ago.

1922 Haxan. I’ve seen this title on numerous lists both of the horror and Film(tm) persuasions. At a 7.6 rating on IMDB, it would stand to reason it’s a watchable experience I could probably prioritize next time I feel like looking into the past or doing a horror binge. The only thing I know about it besides the era of film is its about witches and probably demons or the devil given the photos that came up when I clicked the link.

1932 Freaks. I’ve seen clips of this one and recognized references within culture, but I’ve not yet watched the movie itself. Given my appreciation of weird nonsense in movies, it’s probably about time.

1940 The Grapes of Wrath. Of course, I could read the book. But a two-hour 8-rated movie sounds easier on the soul given the synopsis. Coming from an agriculture science education, I’m familiar with the historical background of the movie already, so I’m expecting it to be bleak, and that has made me put this off into that vague “maybe someday” place that rarely escapes into “yes today”.

1952 Singin’ in the Rain. I don’t know how I haven’t seen this yet. I’ve seen the title piece – where he’s dancing in a wet city – many times in culture but the movie itself never made its way to me.

1961 West Side Story. I better understand how this one skipped me: when I would have been most likely to see it I would have thought musicals were boring. The title came back to mind more recently with the remake(?) and now I feel like it’s about time. Unfortunately, I am a slave to “now” and a 65 year old movie doesn’t fit.

1965 The Sound of Music. Another one where I’m just, like, how? How did this miss me? Traces of it permeate film and yet 11 year old me watched Critters and/or V.I. Warshawski for the nth time. Did my mom hate musicals or something? Doubtful, she loved family movies. So who knows.

1970 Patton. I have a certain affinity for war movies – they scratch a similar itch that horror does, can’t imagine why – so it’s about time to watch this one. I’ve seen at least part of the speech from this one but have no idea about the content of the movie otherwise.

1974 Young Frankenstein. I need to just see this already. It’s been on my shortlist for ages, like maybe the second after I saw Blazing Saddles in my early 20s. Why does my soul fear fun so much?

1978 Animal House. I am very curious to see how this movie has held up over time. I’m just a few years younger than the movie and a teenage me probably would have watched it under the assumption it was an exaggerated documentary. Alas, I didn’t go to “college” college, and I haven’t seen this to know what the hell.

1983 The Right Stuff. Baby, the right stuff. Why does Dave, intentionally or not (*checks synopsis* ok yes, he did it on purpose), quote the title of this movie?

1984 Amadeus. Look at them fancy pictures, ma. Gonna get me an 80s Marie Antoinette treatment?

1986 Castle In The Sky. There are a bunch of kid-focused anime movies I still haven’t seen that I probably should.

1988 My Neighbor Totoro. Ditto. This one in particular has been on my to-watch shortlist for ages.

1994 Leon The Professional. Much curiosity to be had here. I was likely slightly too young to see it in 1994 and it didn’t return to consciousness (if I ever saw ads for it in the first place) until I was old enough to not really be jazzed about the idea of watching movies from the 90s.

1998 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Boys close to me in age couldn’t shut up about this one that year. Considering the type of person, it was off-putting enough to skip it.

1999 Audition. This and Martyrs have been in my queue since I had a queue. Fortunately for me people talked about these movies enough to tell me I have to be in the right mood for them, and mostly I’m in the mood to avoid gore and torture porn. Alas, my interest in picking at horror suggests I should do the thing.

2000 Battle Royale. I wish I’d seen this one on release because watching a bunch of kids kill each other was peak my aesthetic in 2000. I don’t think I heard about this movie’s existence until 2008 or later, by which point I was divorced of the idea of watching teenagers do anything at all. Also I just remembered that Columbine happened right before this movie came out, and LOL, WTF JAPAN. It was a few years later, but I haven’t watched Elephant yet because of the same content (except as a drama), and I imagine I might never see it.

2009 Dogtooth. I know nothing of this movie beyond the synopsis and director, leading to a guess that this movie is probably fucked up. Mostly I’m just here noticing how few movies from the first decade of the 2000s that I care about in my queue, and I imagine that has a lot to do with how many random movies I caught on TV circa 2001-2005 then backtracking during the next few years when I had high speed internet and on demand movies. I knew IMDB probably as early as 2000 or 2001 but didn’t have an account to keep track of things for another decade, so maybe I missed some weird horror or indie things that would have appealed and now they’re lost to the ether.

2010 Blue Valentine. Pretty sure I added this to my queue right when I had a queue. I maybe had it on a mental shortlist at some point. But then bad relationship noise means romance is off the table. But then I tolerated romance again so it was back on. Then it had been years and why bother. Then it was like why haven’t I seen this yet. Then more shitty relationship noise. Then exhaustion. Eventually I will see this and wonder why it took this long. The good news is the new incentive is learning Ryan Gosling isn’t an absolute tool as can so often happen with actors.

2014 John Wick. I saw this. I likely have written record of watching it. And I remember nothing. Something about a dog dying, guy has the sad, then guy goes to pick a fight with everyone who done his dog wrong. I just mentally pictured The Dude on his search of rug, except with guns. In any case, because I don’t remember the details of this movie, I haven’t watched the sequels. Why so many sequels. Does he think his dog will return? I bet there’s a second dog. Maybe someone overturns a fish tank. “You killed my Goldie: prepare to die.” Men will do anything except go to therapy.

2015 Straight Outta Compton. At the time this came out I wondered who this movie was for. Like were we not just five minutes ago experiencing 1993 together? But there are people alive then who somehow missed the train on Nirvana entirely, and my dumb ass has documentaries about doom/thrash/whatever other music I have abused queued, so… yeah. I haven’t seen this, of course, but I was worried it was exploitative or glorifying poverty.

2017 One Cut of the Dead. I have gotten so close to watching this so many times and then my brain says “BUT WHAT ABOUT NEW STUFF!” and I end up watching new horror instead. This movie will happen, it will.

2021 CODA. I was still fresh post interpreting English into sign and dementia-english at the time this came out so I had to opt out of watching it for fear of it hitting way too close to home. The curiosity is very much there but it’s hard for me to watch movies with ASL without it becoming an ordeal even without fresh hell going in my life.

2021 Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. I planned to watch this as it released to the internet but I could not find the headspace for a chill movie at the time and things got worse, not better.

2023 Perfect Days. I imagine, from the synopsis, this movie is like watching someone quietly play Stardew Valley without ever going to the mines. My anxiety was rampant in 2023 into 2024 and I likely wouldn’t have been able to finish this.

2024 Memoir of a Snail. I’ve skipped past a lot of animation and family-focused movies because of their so often emotionally brutal results, and I don’t really particularly care for crying. If it isn’t the story itself, it’s me thinking about who I might have watched this movie with, and ugh. Fuckin’ stupid life. But it’ll happen in time.

2025 Zootopia 2. I almost watched this near Oscars time but quit as I remember absolutely nothing about the first movie. Do I watch the first one again or nah? Is it worth the effort for a kid-focused movie that’ll probably re-explain things for me? Hm.

2025 Sisu: Road to Revenge. This was shortlisted the second I heard about its eventual existence. Good to see it has a 6.8 rating but I’m worried the dry humor vibe of the first movie will be lost on a sequel now that we know dude’s indestructible. It’s crazy to me the genres don’t list Sisu as a comedy.

2025 Sirat. Just look at those gigantic speakers. I’ve watched quick clips of this movie and the sound is very appealing. *me listening to Nine Inch Noize right now*

2025 Fucktoys. The cover art alone. I also love trash.

2025 Obsession. Despite the date it’s listed under, it just came out in theaters. It’s getting the hype machine treatment despite being horror. One wonders what for. Seriously considering watching it in theaters before it leaves but I have to plan around my health situation, so, we’ll see. Seeing it at home in a month or two is fine, too.

2026 Hokum. “A horror writer…” Stop. Sold. Jack is a dull boy.

2026 The Drama. Mr Twilight sure has made a lot of good creative career decisions since those movies, hasn’t he.

2026 Is God Is. Someone described this movie the other day in a way that I was like, well, glad I already have it marked in queue. No idea what they said now. The quick skim of the trailer reminds me of Tarantino, but I could be off base.

2026 I Love Boosters. The cover art and imagery looks incredibly appealing. More pretty movies please (also, more glitter and Claymation and creepy dark fantasy).

2026 Send Help. The synopsis reminds me of Triangle of Sadness (a very difficult movie about class and power), but the cover art suggests a different vibe.

2026 Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. So far early critics aren’t liking this one as much as I would expect, so safe to assume the director went to the weird place again. lol.

2026 Backrooms. I FINALLY (half-)watched the video the other day. People are really starved for original horror. I am very curious if this will be terrible (expected) or a top-whatever (very possible).

2026 The Odyssey. I don’t think they’re advertising this movie hard enough. When will trailers appear upon my analog fridge? In my dreams? Nolan is a money-maker and the cast is expensive, so, I would imagine this will be decent. But yeah. STFU. I heard you the first time!

2026 Disclosure Day. Look at sci-fi, flirting with me like that. It’s a Spielberg movie so it’s probably something you can watch with grandma at the end of the day*, but I’ll go into it with expectations of intellectual titillation regardless. *Maybe watch it with her in the afternoon; those 6pm bedtimes beckon regardless of film quality and there’s just no need to cosplay Love You Forever (auto-tear) with grandma when yer mom’s right there. Oh fuck, I really teared up just typing that. This is your fault, ET! MF’ING BOOKS!

2026 The Wolf Will Tear Your Immaculate Hands. I will watch this guy in just about anything but then you said PNW and horror. Chocolate, peanut butter, AND whipped cream?! The lack of a concrete release date is alarming and makes me think this won’t come out anytime soon.

2026 Ice Cream Man. A billion years ago I freewrote a horror story with an ex featuring a perverted ice cream man, and Eli Roth made one of my favorite movies from the same era of my poor sense of humor (Cabin Fever). Unless this gets absolutely terrible reviews, I’ll probably see it. Since the plot evidently involves food, maybe they’ll reference “PANCAKES!” in it somehow just for my own stupidity.

2026 Verity. What am I, psychic? While reading the book a couple of years ago I got the impression that I was reading a future movie. The cast suggests it shouldn’t be dogshit terrible, so there’s that.

2026 The Social Reckoning. I really hope the press and talk surrounding this movie helps push more people off Meta platforms.

2026 Dune: Part Three. The time is slowly approaching that this epic trio finally comes to a close. And it’s still over six months away, and probably longer still for me to see it.

2026 Werwulf. Willem Dafoe takes things to 11 and horror expectations for Eggers are high after Nosferatu. OMFG I was just reminded he’s reportedly directing a Labyrinth sequel. Just fuck my shit up.

2027 Spaceballs: The New One. A beautiful excuse to rewatch Spaceballs. Short story: my mom had luggage with a lock set to “0000”, and I would always think of Spaceballs because of how stupid and insecure that was, assuming she ever actually went anywhere. Looking forward to seeing Rick Moranis on screen again.

2027 “Untitled Paranormal Activity Project“. Who wants to bet it involves Youtube somehow?

2027 The Exorcist. No synopsis, just a director and cast. Seems somewhat promising from those factors, though I’m guessing the tone will be different (more subdued creepy?) from the original based on who’s directing.

2027 Return of the Living Dead. I think I’ll end here. I know nothing about the director other than the appearance of some very low rated movies before this. The top-listed actor has had a mixture of movies, so that doesn’t help. Hard to imagine an improvement over the original cast, too. This does remind me that I plan to eventually watch all of the Final Destination movies (I’ve seen the first one for sure, probably the second or third, and none in more recent history).

My internet cut out as it often does at this time of night and I’m around 50 movies here, so I won’t keep going… but there’s more. This very short list is probably less than 1% of my total list. I am ambitious. I am also indecisive and writing all of this barely helped narrow down what I should watch next.

Doing the Colbert Questionert

The long story short is I am very disappointed by how narrow and increasingly censored in favor of uptight conservatives general media has become. It’s more than just television, but The Late Show being canceled feels like one of the more obvious clues that free speech is in trouble in the US.

I could go on, but my finger situation says don’t, so instead, in honor of ye olde free speech and the show’s end tonight, I’m going to take the Colbert Questionert. Keepin’ it simple.

*****

What is the best sandwich?
The best sandwich I ever had was a grilled cheese at the Tillamook Cheese Factory in-house restaurant. The bread was perfectly crunchy but soft, the cheese stringy, and young me was in heaven. Evidently it’s called the Tillamook Creamery now, and I haven’t been there in ages, but highly recommend if you’re a dairy foodie.

What was your first concert?
My first “real” concert was A Perfect Circle supporting Nine Inch Nails when they were touring for Mer de Noms and The Fragile. Topped out from the start.

What is the scariest animal?
spiders

Apples or oranges?
During ideal conditions, oranges.

Have you ever asked someone for their autograph?
I’ve brought it up indirectly in concept but no.

What do you think happens when we die?
I’ve read/watched a lot of psychic and afterlife stuff and the consensus there seems to be that our essence gets transported to some other heavenly dimension. I wonder if that’s a trick of the mind, of chemicals causing imagery of a certain flavor to reduce suffering in death but the reality is a stark nothing. But then I think, energy is only transmuted, so where was “I” before, where would “I” be after? Where does what we see as soul and personality go? Who even am “I” – am I truly a separate being or am I simply not aware of what I extend to for the trappings of this physical body? I used to think that there’s nothing but grappling with the “soul” concept makes it a difficult question. I’d hope to know what happens in unfinished stories and science and the progression of humanity and the state of the earth & solar system but, yeah.

Favorite action movie?
Terminator 2

Window or aisle?
Window, no question. I will bravely endure the frustration of my fellow passengers I pass on the way to the bathroom for the sake of a beautiful view.

Favorite smell?
Used to be my cat. She had a gentle almost sweet bread-like scent.

Least favorite smell?
Anything related to excrement or death.

What is your earliest memory?
For years I thought it was a time when I was sitting in the little area between the kitchen and the den looking towards the hall where my mom was in the bathroom doing something like doing her hair with a curling iron before going somewhere. Then I randomly remembered my older siblings coming over one day when I was still in a crib and they promptly set me down in the crib and then all laughed together with my parents down the hall. I was standing in my crib like, wtf fam, why am I not included in this.

Cats or dogs?
A terrible question. I grew up with dogs and then spent 22 years with mostly cats. Both are great and every one of them has a unique personality.

You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life. What is it?
Even worse question. I couldn’t do it. Not a life worth living.

What number am I thinking of?
pi, but my guess before I proceed with watching the answer is something abstractly related to Lord of the Rings. (Edit: NOPE!)

Describe the rest of your life in 5 words.

I just finished rewatching Johnny Mnemonic for the first time.

I saw this in the theater on release which I’m guessing I saw pretty close to my 13th birthday. I don’t remember my assessment, so I must not have cared that much about it.

Rewatching it 31 years later: I had no idea it was a comedy. The acting, the line deliveries… just, holy shit. And then Ice-T, Henry Rollins, fucking He-Man, a dolphin? How’d I forget the dolphin? It’s easy to set aside the outdated vision of the future (to be fair, they always got the evil corporation part right), but what in the fever dream fuck happened here. It looks like it was a cool idea on paper then someone was like (hands) aliens (pyramid in background) and here came Keanu, classically seasoned as an actor from playing (checks resume) Dog Boy. Crazy that The Matrix got made after this.

Ha, Stabbing Westward and Helmet in the credits. Great. I was sampling Helmet again the other day.

Where did this dark, grungy PKD feel in movies about the future go? How sterile the future actually looked. Safe blues and beige for everyone! Here’s your perfect rectangle that connects to totally-not-skynet, not a cable to be found anywhere, and remember to trash it every 2-3 years because we must always be prescient and never allow space for analog dust. Was all the dusty grunge a reaction to the hair spray and day-glo of the decade previous? And now, that?

I see teenagers today wearing the ridiculous pants that my peers and I wore in high school (wet legs and all) and it begs some questions about hackysacks and mixtapes. I assume it’s just another fleeting fashion, but maybe they catch on faster than my fucking idiot peers did and prevent the next agreeably blue-based takeover of the entire internet in the name of convenience aka ease of manipulation.

Mmm the irony of how I was going to post this fully on bluesky until it hit 300 characters. But you know I was talking about Facebook and Twitter. And Amazon and Walmart and Temu and… I guess the good news is that not every restaurant is Taco Bell (Sysco maniacally laughs in the background).

Words about Oranssi (but mostly about life)

Literally no one has visited this still-new site yet unless said visitor was using some weird anti-tracking thing I didn’t know was possible during a time when most people have been stuck in walled algorithmic gardens so long they forgot the internet experience was supposed to be choose your own adventure, so much of these words feel in vain, but if you’re here and you just want it quick: I am biased when it comes to this band but, if this band interests you at all, this is your sign to see them live. That’s it, you don’t need to read any further.

Oranssi Pazuzu played Roadburn in 2025. While live video is not usually the best choice to experience music, I usually check in on Roadburn-specific sets, and I checked in on theirs.

I started to type words about it then (the first paragraph below) but inspiration hit me mid-thought. I could have let it be, but it’s hard to let all that satanic vibe alone. Writers gonna write. Unedited beyond adding the link, this is what came out:

That live interpretation of “Valotus” (~22-31 mins of this video) is something. It’s jarring on album. Would imagine hearing it for the first time live is very “???”. “Is this what it’s like to be in a scanner?” says guy on second-day acid before printing a TPS report from his maw.

…and it’s just pages and pages of “666 666 666…”

Jeff begins to panic, embarrassed at his local interruption of social decorum, and tries to grasp the papers that spill from his face. They float through his hands, glimmering in the strobing lights as gravity and the force of 3000 breaths seem to take them… but they are not real to anyone but him, and Jeff unintentionally slaps the back of a patron in front of him. Oh. Oh. Sorry! I’m sorry. More 666-filled papers fall between words. “MOTORHEAD” back patch turns, wondering what the fuck is going on behind him. I’m so sorry. Paper. Another paper. Motorhead nods and rolls his head back to the stage. Oranssi full-body screams something about planting native trees and giving your mom a call in Finnish, probably. Jeff’s face burns from the horror of having become satan’s xerox machine in public again. He wonders, should I just leave? Someone taps him on the shoulder. “You okay?” he hears, but he’s afraid to look. He already knows it’s a trap. This is just like the last time. He throws his eyes to the floor with urgency, curling his chin down and stopping the paper factory. Don’t you dare. “You need some water, man?” Don’t fucking do it. Stare at the floor. Stare at the floor. Motorhead’s shoes shift their weight over an imaginary paper. “Come on, let’s get you some water…” the taunting voice continues, pulling his sleeve. No, I’m fine! Jeff’s reaction to the stranger’s touch is enough to pull his eyes to the right, where The Creature promptly demands the full force of his attention, fully against Jeff’s former will. Taking but the briefest pause of victory, It then cracks Its own mouth open, burning Jeff in cruel sonic light. Motorhead nonchalantly wipes a bit of sudden sweat from his temple as Jeff’s soul is taken, raped from his body, pulled into the blinding white void. Everyone continues staring at the stage, unaware of the trick they’d just been played, and Oranssi whisper-yells something about the importance of separating your recycling, probably, sending a wink in the direction of The Creature.

I (finally?) saw them live, and I’ll be, it’s almost like I speak Finnish.

My subconscious mind caught “Valotus” way before my conscious mind woke up to its arrival. I know because my mood shifted from I Am Present, Yes, to “teehee, side… effects” after noticing that the main noise on stage was coming from the keyboards on the sides of the stage. The song then began to build into something recognizable, and even for my inability to tell you exactly what I’d heard so far even though it was all quite familiar to the point of wondering if it was a best-of set that specifically targeted me, my conscious brain suddenly woke up: “oh! Satan is coming to take our souls!”

And so it was delivered. All the prior thought trails about wondering if they’d even be allowed in the US mixed with “it’s pretty funny that they let them in, this music sounding as it does, at a time like this in this country” and flipped around to “I wonder if people walking by on the street think this venue is having a very loud exorcism.” The smirks. The giggles. Am I the only one who finds pseudo-satanic things hilarious? No, but yeah… All that christian-based brainwashing I witnessed and being bullied for saying the F-word and having normal human boundaries I was willing to fight for circa age 8 onward really makes one appreciate some theatrical devil worshiping. Hey look, it’s me on a Tuesday, according to the uptight, misogynistic, control freak fuckwads of yore. I’m here for the sonically violent soul ascension.

Is the song, or any other, actually about these concepts? I couldn’t say. Even translating the lyrics, hmm, well, there’s a horror meets sci-fi vibe there, but it’s not saying what comes to mind first. The vocals and feel of the music come across as dark, brooding, lost in space stuck with an indescribable monster on the ship, sick in a way that will never heal. What’s literally being said is similar to that, even if not exact. But the presentation, the sound of the music itself, takes me to the source of their name, of devils and demons and otherworldly creatures, and hmm, not sure it’s there in those words.

Right away I was a bit thrown by how black metal-forward they were live. The music on album is still like a wall of sound and chaotic, sure, but is produced with more of the detailed psychedelic sounds pushed in view. It was harder to hear the shifts I do at home that cue the song is changing direction. I borderline abused their 2020 album, Mestarin Kynsi, and have listened to the newest one enough in recent times, so it was odd that I wasn’t always able to keep track of where I was in the song live and essentially be told how much my brain has latched on to keys over other instruments. For my history of making fun of keyboards on stage (old timer note: their soundcheck was an entirely reasonable time! holy shit! professionalism is neat!), that was a strange realization. On stage all were prominent, visible, heard, but eyes usually went to guitars and vocals. Once I realized this was how it was going to be, lol bye brain, no bouncy ball to follow along for you, we’re just going for this ride. I kept no notes, took no photos, closed the door on trying to figure anything out, and it was what it was.

This is what setlist.fm says they played:

Bioalkemisti
Muuntautuja
Kuulen ääniä maan alta
Uusi teknokratia
Voitelu
Hautatuuli
Valotus
Ikikäärme
Oikeamielisten sali
Vasemman käden hierarkia

The final song was an encore. I went on a complete mental vacation and could not place it. Was this old or new? It felt vaguely familiar, but it should. Yes, I see, 17 minute runtime, no wonder my synapses stopped firing placement on this one. Part of me wants to blame age or a decade suffering consequences, but I’m pretty sure even an enthusiastic 25 year old me would have been resistant on that much song, and 15 year old me would have wondered what was wrong with “music” people, unaware I’d become the thing. Was it 17 minutes live? It was a while for sure. Have I said it was cool yet? Like people interested in Oranssi Pazuzu need to be told what’s is or isn’t cool… Who cares? Sir and/or ma’am, my soul got eated by The Creature today, that’s good enough.

Behind the scenes (this is a good spot for you impatient “I thought this was a review, not a diary!” types to heed the first paragraph and leave), this was the first live music I’ve seen in actual person in a very long time. The last band I saw in person was High on Fire. I still remember that show as being fantastic, and it’s carried through the void of cruel dementia, my cat dying, the pandemic, my health going to shit, my mom dying, near-miss homelessness, narcissistic spirit-stomping men, all the way through the other side of much tedious life noise I’m so fucking sick of dealing with. Once I’d moved even further from the source, I didn’t know if I’d ever see a show again. Was this facet of my life just plain over and I was in denial? Who the fuck am I even, without it? I’d get to thinking and remember things like when I had to miss Heilung because of my mom, after missing so much already because of that situation getting worse and worse, and then the pandemic happened and what now? I already thoroughly distrusted humanity before this ever turned into diseases and politics; I can’t do it, y’all. I got offers to join humanity again, but I knew coming back wasn’t going to be on anyone else’s terms, anyone else’s idea. My schedule, my body, and my ability to deal with myself and the world on whichever specific day would have to tell me what the fuck and when the fuck.

There were a few “that makes sense” moments to return, but only just recently did I have an inkling that it would be this band. I knew it was different – not a hopeful mirage – when I prepared my bag and checked to make sure I had earplugs and they weren’t expired. Never made it all the way to earplugs before (I always kept a few in my bag back-when). But I couldn’t be sure. I’ve had anxiety attacks before shows I never went to before, and who’s to say how much that just had to do with my life then. Maybe if I got dressed and conquered all to even leave the house, I’d change my mind on the way there and end up someplace else. Maybe I’d wake up with yet another brutal headache. I’m going through it hormonally these days and that could surprise me in some new fashion. Hell, I haven’t had a series of hot flashes or one of the intense ones in several days, which is really fucking weird considering the onslaught just prior, and quite telling that hormones have kicked back into gear and period is on its way. Hey bitch, you’re months fucking late. Hmm, this would be a fun place for an immaculate conception joke tied in with all that 666 talk upstairs, but the real joke here is that I’m already (low growl) satan (devil horns) (drinks ancient wine) (leather jacket cracks) (grimace) so no Rosemary’s Baby situation for me. But it’s certainly a christmas miracle I did all I needed to do, wasn’t suffering beyond the usual terrible anxiety, left the house, and arrived where I meant to be.

One then asks if, after all this time, it was worth it. It’s hard, for my history, to drum up hype about these things the way someone who’d only been to three concerts in their life before might. I also didn’t know who Oranssi was until they became a client in 2018 and wasn’t able to really put in the effort to listen to them until the 2020 album, so I don’t have a potential of decades of history there to cause a nostalgic conniption the way I might for, I dunno, Tool? And then there’s just me anymore, which maybe could be changing or maybe me crying every time someone talks about the lunar flyby is a fluke. A month ago we went to the moon, you guys!!! There was an eclipse and you could see a bunch of planets from the dark side and then we came back and everything was so cool and omfg!!!! And we’re going again! I see I can, in fact, experience untainted wonder and joy this decade. The glimmer of hope for the future is still there. It is still possible to achieve a positive mental state about a thing and maintain it longer than five minutes. But getting excited about live music stuff is still a lot more of a journey than it was a decade or two previous. I now know my back is going to hurt 10 minutes in, and my legs are going to go soon after, and the headache that comes on during and/or after (this time: both), and the fucking lights I made fun of in my prose, and crowds, and venues, and what time when where what, and the literal journey there and back that is longer and more expensive than it ever was. I’m in awe that some people within my scene somehow manage to attend multiple shows a week sandwiched between long and tedious journeys to get there and back. WTF do you mean you didn’t eat or sleep today, TOO? AND you partook in whatever festivities?! Meanwhile if I don’t get 7 hours and at least 400 calories before I leave the house to simply check the mail, lol f u enjoy your punishment. And count tomorrow out, no plans, just recovery. What did I even do? Nothing. Existed. Two days after the show I woke up with another multi-hour headache, because that’s what I get for trying.

But the question was: was it worth it? To watch their vocalist scream into the crowd as “Valotus” hit its peak moment? Yes. Yes it was. Whether this is truly the end of years of frustrated setting-aside of live music or just another moment in time isn’t yet clear and won’t be for probably another year, but boy did that single moment wrap up my absence nicely. I ended 2020 raving about this band and nearly a quarter turn of Saturn later I got to see the results.

I’m sorry, I’ve made it serious. I swear I was stifling out-of-place glee through that whole song and thinking of none of this short of the expected upcoming glass-breaking soul ascension.

Of course Winamp just threw music at me to remind me about having a laugh attack the first time I gave a certain band we’re not supposed to forget a chance. Other, similar memories come to mind. I seem to have a history of laughing at aggressively serious things. I was just thinking of a time I saw said band at Satyricon the other day, of hitting glee state and on the way out being perplexed at a mysterious white powder on a toilet seat. I wondered if it was cocaine, and if so, who the fuck wastes that much cocaine? Besides Elizabeth Wurtzel and QOTSA, I know nothing of these things, but I do know these things cost money. One can’t really explain those Satyricon bathrooms, though. Perhaps the former tenant really needed to baby powder their crotch at 1am. Alas, Star Theater rivals with its incredibly moist seats and floors, eventually punctuated with in-toilet blood while I’m like, well, guess that tracks, given the exorcism I just witnessed. Sign outside door: This isn’t your mom’s house. Please take your miscarriage with you, Susan. And now toilet blood is amusing.

Oh, I forgot to say that I took the earplugs out. I had them in for Wayfarer but the pros and cons added up towards more pros of hearing the room as-is without them. Maybe the wrong move for the number of times I got pierced in the ear with shrill noise, but for all the time of nothing live at all and me already knowing ASL, fuck it. Whatever frequency I might have lost I probably already lost a long time ago.

Current state of ears: hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. DAE tinnitus?

Before I wrap, I should return to the “peopling” thought I almost touched on then skipped past. The best way to put this is that I am historically a 9pm to 6am shopper because I can in no way emotionally deal with the horrors of a grocery store during business hours. I will absolutely take a couple of stray weirdos and startling raccoons on my walk home over anyplace jam-packed with people asleep standing up. I don’t have the patience. It’s overwhelming. I can’t focus. I get so mad. I return home irritated, frustrated, anxious, on edge, burnt out, and probably pissed off that I’ll have to do it again. It’s hard to forget since it’s a forever issue, but I got so used to the relative quiet of my new location that somehow I didn’t know it was a bad idea to visit a busy shopping center at 2pm last year, and what a reminder. No wonder I’d listen to Conan on volume 11 before I’d have to leave the house that one year. No wonder I couldn’t sleep after work when I was a server.

I reflect back to all the crowds of my concert history and wonder where the mad is. It’s mostly a lot of “welp, that’s what I get for not being six inches taller”. Maybe the mad is twisted into just plain nervous anxiety, as I do remember my sleep schedule always getting destroyed by concerts since I couldn’t sleep until past dawn nearly every time even if I went to bed by midnight the nights before. But AT the show? Since I learned I was firmly in camp metalhead and stopped trying to push through “nicer” music that is populated by assholes, people themselves largely haven’t bothered me. There’s a routine of the thing, unsaid expectations of behavior, most people here “get it”, and it feels right and fine. Someone eight feet tall stood in front of me, oh, well, it’s a doom show, everyone here is eight feet tall but me, shoulda fought for the front if I wanted to see. There’s only been a few times I’ve gotten irritated at crowds, and really, it’s more about individuals than the fact that the crowd exists.

I was still worried. With the previous humans-at-2pm trips I’ve taken causing my knitting to unravel mixed in with frustration about specific people I’ve known up close near this scene, I was expecting to find the whole crowd thing an unwanted experience. And yes, it still sucks I’m shorter than the average patron. But the crowd experience was just… yes, and? Okay? Why was I worried about this? How did I not know it would be fine? Evidently going too long caused some of those shapeless cosmic beings to appear real. To be fair, I’ve met some difficult individuals here, but I more or less know what their ilk looks like and can choose not to engage. But lately I’d rather not even have the potential. Alas, not a single one was present. It felt much more like it was for me towards the beginning of my journey, when I was an anonymous, faceless blob in the crowd. Thank fuck. I know I didn’t press the hard reset button here – I definitely have advantages I didn’t have 20 years ago – but enough distance seems to have been good for the ol’ tension.

And the crowd itself was like it always was, give or take the details. Hyoo-mans doing the hyoo-man thing. I knew the show would sell out the day beforehand when I checked to see ticket numbers, which it did early in the day, and I knowingly endured like always with these things. It was great for the band and added up to a “nothing” for me on a personal level.

With that knowledge out of the way, maybe that means I have one less thing causing mental chaos so I can get to another live thing sooner rather than later. I don’t know what that is, couldn’t even hazard a guess right now with my unpredictable health situation, but I’d love to be able to get back to these types of experiences being the norm rather than the exception. Here’s hoping that $5.50 gas price (WTF) goes away by the time I get there.

With me finishing this post almost two days later, I’m feeling tired, my finger is fucking killing me, and I’m burnt out on myself here and wondering if this even worth posting at all. But I did the thing. I’m glad to know that the past six or so years of listening to this band probably a bit too much will likely continue and hope their tour onward provides a tiny outlet that many of us darkly creative ‘muricans need these days.

Bonus factoid: I made the mistake of telling someone I saw a live band and the “what band?” question led to this post. What clarity other people’s unintentional ignorance gives us sometimes.
